Sunderlal Bahuguna was a prominent environmentalist and a leader of the Chipko movement. He fought for the preservation of forests in the Himalayas and later spearheaded the Anti-Tehri Dam movement. He was known for taking up environmental issues.
Born on 9 January 1927, Sunderlal Bahuguna was a true satyagrahi and an avid Gandhian. He dedicated his life to the cause of society and the environment. He pioneered many social movements including the famous Chipko Movement which was a turning point in India's forest conservation efforts. Chipko means "to hug".Bahuguna gave direction to the movement and raised general awareness among the masses about the importance of trees in the Himalayan region. Due to his efforts, a 15-year ban on chopping green trees in 1980 came into effect. Later on, he used Gandhian methods like satyagraha and hunger strikes to protest the building of the Tehri dam in Uttarakhand on the Bhagirathi river.
A pioneer of the Chipko Movement and a Padma Vibhushan awardee, Sunderlal Bahuguna was a passionate defender of the Himalayan people.
